Eileen Gray (1878-1976)
Eileen Gray was on Scottish-Irish origin.
She then discovered the workshop of D.charles, a painters who was specialized in lacquers. She worked with him and learned all that was necessary for that period of her professional career. In 1902 she went to Paris where she improved her design and oriental lacquer knowledge.
She caught the attention of Jacques Doucet, the couturier, an art knower and collector, he entrusted her with the job of furnishing and decorating his new home. Her first big assignment was furnishing "Madame LÚvy" in Rue de Lota in Paris.
A long, illustrated article in a Dutch magazine, a new exhibition and the approval of Gropius, Mallet-Stevens and Le Corbusier encouraged Gray to take the step towards architecture.
From the 50's on, her sight and hearing continued to diminish; however, she continued to invent new projects and to experiment with new materials.
